There have been a number of port, freight and logistics studies for the Upper North Island in recent years. Unfortunately, these studies have left us underwhelmed, being largely brought about by political motivations and in some cases completely ignoring the needs of our largest port. Last week, an industry led report and action plan was released to help inform future investment and planning. Our counterpart in the Waikato, Te Waka, and Priority One instigated this report, with the help of many industry players. You can read the Waikato and Bay of Plenty Freight Action Plan here.

While the report highlights investment needed to provide resilience and extra capacity for rapidly growing freight needs, locally we also need to throw everything we can at our transport system to get better results, that includes good public transport options. At Priority One, we believe that action to correct our congestion needs to be wide-ranging and swift. This is why you may have seen us express our disappointment at the lack of progress on ferries last week.
