We can admit that 2022 has had a rough start, and March unfortunately continues this trend. Omicron continues to put strain on existing labour and talent shortages for our local businesses, with some sectors feeling this more acutely than others.

Some of the smaller retail and hospitality businesses can expect their operations to be hampered by illness and isolation requirements of key staff, with the only choice for some being to close their doors temporarily. This unfortunately comes at a time where demand is already low and local support for these businesses is critical to help them get through this period.

The kiwifruit sector is another whose staff shortages have had devastating consequences on their capacity to keep up with demand. With previous border closures and the current Omicron surge coinciding with their seasonal peak, this has created the perfect storm for what could be one of the toughest harvest seasons yet. Still, NZKGI are doing a great job of showcasing jobs available in the sector – if you have contacts interested in seasonal work (students through to seniors) please point them to their recruitment portal.

As we prepare for the release of our upcoming Priority One Future of Work campaign, we can admit that 2022 has had a rough start and Covid’s impact on labour shortages continues to put strain on a number of sectors – including the upcoming kiwifruit harvest season. Rubix was formed in 2019 and is a national project management firm, employing a team of over 55 Project Directors and Project Managers, with regional offices in Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown.
