Anamata programme offers students a pathway into construction

Fosters has partnered with Te Wharekura o Mauao  to launch the Anamata Programme, offering students a unique opportunity to explore the construction industry firsthand. The programme, which kicked off in Term 3, was created in response to Te Wharekura o Mauao ’s request to help students gain practical work experience. Under the guidance of Mitika, Fosters’ Sustainability Lead, the programme is designed to give young people a taste of the various roles within the construction industry, including quantity surveying, carpentry and more.

One of the early participants, Cohen, successfully completed eight days of work experience over an eight-week period. His dedication and enthusiasm have earned him a subcontracted position through Fosters, until he officially starts an apprenticeship with ABC Homes after finishing school. Cohen’s experience has set a positive precedent for future students, and Fosters hopes to expand the Anamata Programme to other schools in 2025. They are already welcoming another student.

Fosters aims to offer students who perform well in the programme further opportunities, such as apprenticeships or additional training. The structure allows students to see whether a career in construction suits them before fully committing, saving time and resources for both students and companies.

In a separate discussion with James from Livingstone, it’s apparent the success of the model has caught the attention of other industry leaders. Livingstone plans to implement a similar programme in 2025, with both companies working together to inspire the next generation of builders. The initiative is open to students aged 16 and above, allowing them to plan their secondary school courses around potential careers in the trades.

Unlike the traditional Gateway Programme, Anamata is open to any interested student, ensuring wider accessibility. The cost of involvement is minimal, covering only personal protective equipment, such as boots and gear. This low-cost, high-value programme promises to make a lasting impact on students’ career paths and the future of the construction industry.
