Empowering Wāhine in Trades

Latest News

Vertical Horizons in collaboration with Priority One recently hosted an empowering Wāhine in Trades event aimed at encouraging young women to explore career opportunities in the trades and building industries. Supported by businesses like Fulton Hogan, Barrett Homes, and McLeod Cranes, the event offered invaluable insights into various career pathways within these industries.

The event featured five action-packed hands-on stations designed to give students a taste of what a career in the trades entails. Participants had the unique opportunity to operate and drive equipment such as cranes, scissor lifts, and diggers. Activities included precision tasks like using a digger to pick up a block of wood and drop it into a bucket, and manoeuvring cranes to knock a tennis ball off a cone—challenges that showcased both skill and precision.

Safety was paramount throughout the event, with students given the chance to practice climbing at heights using proper safety gear. This practical experience not only taught essential safety protocols but also boosted confidence among the participants.

In addition to practical skills, the event addressed important topics like mental health and wellbeing in the trades. Discussions emphasised the significance of checking in on colleagues and creating a supportive working environment.

Feedback from both schools and participating businesses underscored the event’s success in fostering meaningful connections. Businesses appreciated the opportunity to engage directly with students, offering guidance and insights into potential career paths. For students, it was a safe and supportive environment where they could step out of their comfort zone and explore new skills without fear or judgment.
